The H-I Network of leading global organisations
has recognised that many companies implementing the "intrapreneur"
concept have been too inwardly focused. Best-practice organisations
have moved to embrace "extrapreneurs" - people with
external perspective and extra entrepreneurial skills.
It is often easy to see disruptive changes with
hindsight, but companies have struggled to identify future
problems and prepare their businesses. Disruptive business
changes are likely to occur in areas such as where technology
discontinuities happen, global environment change and ageing
population. An example where the challenge is being met by
corporates is in the sustainable energy area, where an industrial
business, petroleum organisation, electricity generator and
government department are working in a Joint Opportunity Assembly.
Thinking in other people's
boxes is more productive than an internal workshop that tries
to think outside the box.
