Innovating in a recession - how it's changing and what to do about it
H-I Network, in conjunction with NESTA (National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts), researched the effect of the recession on innovation in large organisations; be that innovation in products, services business processes, markets, or business models. Some argued that innovation should continue as:
- New products and services can enable organisations to offer lower prices and/or enter new markets
- New business processes should enable organisations to compete more effectively and efficiently
- Entering new markets would allow organisations enter emerging areas such as green technology, healthcare and media
- New business models could change the fundamental business to open up new markets for new or existing products
In our research project we:
- Surveyed individuals working in large organisations.
- Conducted in-depth interviews with one or more individuals from large organisations.
- Held a seminar in July to discuss the results of our research and hear from organisations that have chosen to reduce innovation, those that are holding a steady course and those that see the recession as an opportunity and/or a ‘burning platform’ to justify increased levels of innovation. We heard where cuts have been made, where investments have been increased and the thinking that drove these decisions.
- Used the seminar to inform NESTA’s policies and lobbying to create an environment in the UK that encourages and supports innovation in large organisations.
- We are currently compiling the results of the research and outcomes of discussions at the seminar into our next
Research Report.
